Secret Santa Works When the Full List Stays Hidden
One gift each, nobody buying for themselves, and no group-chat screenshot of the whole draw. What to settle before the names are assigned.
Secret Santa works when each person buys for exactly one other person, nobody is assigned themselves, and the full list is not posted in the group chat. Doing that draw by hand gets messy as soon as someone has to be left out of a pair.
Set the group, then draw once
Create the event in Secret Santa and add everyone who is exchanging gifts. Draw when the list is final. Each person should receive only their own assignment, by the link, email, or message the tool provides. Publishing the whole pairing in a group undoes the secret.
- Agree the budget and the date before the draw, not after.
- Ask for a short wish list so the giver is not guessing.
- Redraw only if someone drops out. A second draw for fun reshuffles gifts people may have already bought.
If the group also wants a room to talk without using their usual profiles, that is a separate job for Anonymous Chat. Keep the Santa assignments in the draw, not in that chat.
A worked example
Five people, a budget of 500, and gifts on 20 December. Add the five names in Secret Santa, draw once, and send each person only their own result. Ask them to reply with two gift ideas before they buy. If someone joins after the draw, add them and draw again only if nobody has bought a gift yet. Say that clearly in the group so people do not shop twice.
What not to paste in the group
The full pairing list, screenshots of someone else’s assignment, and the budget after people have already bought. If the group wants a place to talk that is separate from their usual chats, that is anonymous chat, and the assignments still stay in the draw.
The draw has three rules
Each person gives one gift. Nobody is assigned themselves. The full pairing is not posted where the group can see it. Break any one of those and the exchange stops being Secret Santa. Doing the draw by hand gets fragile as soon as someone has to be excluded from a pair, or as soon as a screenshot of the list lands in the chat.
Settle the budget, the date, and whether wish lists are required before the names are assigned. People buy against those facts. Changing the budget after the draw does not un-buy the gift. A redraw is for someone joining or leaving, and only if nobody has already shopped. Say that in the group so a second draw is not treated as a joke.
What each person should receive
Their own assignment, a way to see a short wish list, and the date. Not the other assignments. Not a photo of the organizer’s screen. If the group also wants a side conversation away from their usual chats, that conversation is separate from the draw. The names stay in the draw.
