Words, Characters, and Why the Limits Disagree

A word limit and a character limit measure different things. How spaces, punctuation, reading time, and keyword density change what “length” means.

A word counter answers the question a document rarely shows on its own: how long is this, in the unit the limit uses? Essays are often capped in words. Social captions and form fields are often capped in characters. Reading time is a third number, based on an average pace, for when you want to know how long the piece takes to read aloud or on a page.

Paste, then read the matching limit

Open the word counter and paste the draft. Words are separated by spaces. Characters include letters, spaces, and punctuation, so a character count is always larger than the word count for normal sentences. Sentences and paragraphs follow the breaks already in the text.

If a form says “500 characters,” watch the character count, not the word count. If a teacher says “800 words,” ignore the character total. Mixing those two up is the usual reason a draft looks short and still gets rejected.

Keyword density and case

Keyword density shows which words appear most often. That is a check for repetition, not a target to hit. The same page can also change case — sentence case, upper case, or lower case — when a title or a caption needs a consistent style before you paste it back.

When you need the same line many times before you count it, build the block in the text repeater and paste the result here. Count, separator, and numbering covers how those gaps change the block.

A worked example

The sentence “Count these five words.” is 4 words if you ignore the period, and still 4 words with the period attached to “words.” Characters include the letters, the spaces, and the period. A 280-character caption can be only 40 words, so checking the wrong counter is how a caption gets cut off. Paste the draft into the word counter and read the row that matches the limit you were given.

After you repeat a line

If you built a stack of identical lines with the text repeater, the word count should be the original word count times the number of copies, plus any words you added as a separator. A separator of “ and ” adds one word between copies. A new line adds none. The steps are in how to repeat text online.

Three different lengths

Words are groups separated by whitespace. Characters are every symbol, including spaces and punctuation. Reading time is a pace applied to the word count, often something near 200 words a minute, and it is an estimate for planning, not a stopwatch. A limit that says “500 characters” can reject a passage that is only 80 words. A limit that says “800 words” does not care that the character count looks huge.

Sentences and paragraphs follow the breaks already in the text. One long line with no period is one sentence even if it would have been three if someone had punctuated it. The counter does not invent sentences. If the sentence count looks wrong, the punctuation is what to fix.

Density is a warning light

Keyword density shows which words appear most often. A word that dominates the count may be the subject, or it may be a phrase you repeated without noticing. It is not a score to push higher. Stuffing the same word to move the percentage makes the text worse and does not change what the counter is for. Case conversion is a separate edit: sentence case, upper case, and lower case rewrite letters, and they should be applied when the destination asked for a case, not as a way to “optimize” a paragraph.
